The Cost of Going It Alone:
Why DIY marketing can hold your cohousing community back
-
Without professional strategies, outreach efforts may fail to effectively engage potential members, slowing community growth.
-
DIY marketing can lead to mixed messages and an unprofessional image, reducing trust and credibility.
-
Group members often lack the expertise or bandwidth to manage marketing effectively, leading to burnout or poorly executed campaigns.
-
Without expert guidance, groups may overlook key platforms, strategies, or tools that could accelerate growth.
-
Ineffective marketing can delay reaching full membership, prolonging the process of launching or completing the community.

Inspired by years of research and my personal passion, I took a leap of faith and joined Kathryn McCamant's 500 Communities Program. This year-long intensive provided me with the tools, training, and a network of like-minded professionals to support the growth of the next 500 cohousing communities. After completing the program, I began partnering with forming cohousing groups, leveraging my comprehensive expertise in marketing, membership growth, and community-building to help them succeed.
I bring a unique combination of relationship-building skills and tactical marketing know-how to the table. Over the years, I’ve developed proven systems for sales, strategic planning, digital outreach, and event marketing. These skills translate seamlessly into the challenges cohousing groups face when turning interest into committed equity memberships—a marathon effort that requires strategy, patience, and a deep understanding of human connection.
Forming a cohousing community is no small feat, but it’s a journey worth taking. I believe in empowering groups by identifying critical roles, providing training, and offering tactical support. Together, we can create spaces where individuals feel seen, supported, and free to live as their authentic selves—spaces that not only foster natural connections but redefine what it means to be a neighbor and to live in community.
Christina Marshall
Founder, Coho Collab
For nearly 20 years, I have been immersed in the senior living industry, supporting companies and operators with their sales and marketing efforts. This journey has given me the privilege of helping countless individuals make critical housing decisions later in life—experiences that have been profoundly thought-provoking and humbling.
I was born and raised in Wisconsin, surrounded by the state’s natural beauty and strong sense of community. Now, I live in Minneapolis, MN, where I’m raising my two sons, Louie and Arlo. My personal and professional journey has instilled in me a deep appreciation for fostering connection and creating spaces where people can truly thrive.
Through my career, I’ve witnessed the challenges seniors face in finding spaces where they can thrive: places that foster natural connection without compromising independence. I began to question how we might create environments that blend support, privacy, and authentic community. My search for answers led me to the concept of cohousing, a revolutionary alternative to traditional housing models, particularly for seniors. It addresses the epidemic of social isolation while preserving autonomy—a balance I believe is crucial.
